NAPO NARRATES THE STORY OF S.A THEATRE

Ditshomo – A story on South African Theatre

After SABC 2 made a grave error, on July 5th by scheduling a Rugby documentary, in place of the much anticipated Ditshomo – A story on South African Theatre.
The national broadcaster redeemed itself by flighting Ditshomo on Sunday, July 12th 21:00

Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter. – Chinua Achebe

It’s inspiring to witness artists take the lead in documenting their own stories, it enables the history of the hunt to remain authentic in it’s own voice.

In Part 1 of the 2 part doccie, Masheane narrates the story of the South African theatre space, and the history thereof.

The contribution of the arts to the fight against apartheid in South Africa is, to many, unknown, even less recognized and spoken of.

Focusing on protest theatre, Disthomo narrates how the theatre space became the stage to utter words and feelings that would never have been printed in newspapers or shown on tv, speaking words that would otherwise be silenced.

Switch to any channel on free tv, even the dstv platform, and you are sure to bump into Dieketseng Mnisi, Abigail Khubeka, Seputla Sebogodi, even Sello Maake ka Ncube.

Ask any theatre fanatics about those who have shaped the face of the industry and names like Warona Seane, Athol Fugard, John Kani, Matjamela Motloung,
Paul Grootboom and Neil Coppen won’t fall far from the list of game changers
